President Trump appoints Florida Gov. DeSantis to Council of Governors

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump appointed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to the Council of Governors, alongside governors from nine other states, according to the White House.

The Council of Governors is made up of 10 governors -- five from each party -- appointed to two-year terms, and the purpose of the group is to advise the White House and Department of Defense on issues related to national security, disaster responses, and military coordination.

In a release, White House officials said that the full list of Trump's picks is as follows:

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (VA) -- Co-ChairGov. Josh Stein (NC) -- Co-ChairGov. Ron DeSantis (FL)Gov. Brian Kemp (GA)Gov. Jeff Landry (LA)Gov. Wes Moore (MD)Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (MI)Gov. Kathy Hochul (NY)Gov. Josh Shapiro (PA)Gov. Henry McMaster (SC)

The council was established in 2008 by the National Defense Authorization Act, though it wasn't formally created until 2010, when then-President Barack Obama signed an executive order to officially do so.

Governors appointed to the council are expected to meet at the call of the Secretary of Defense or the council's co-chairs (Youngkin and Stein) to discuss views, information, and advice about what to do regarding matters like national and state defense.

These governors are joined by key federal officials, with council meetings acting as a forum to improve state-federal partnerships.
