What are party-goers and trick-or-treaters wearing on Hallow's Eve?

Americans are expected to spend $3.8 billion on Halloween costumes this year, with 47% of shoppers starting their hunt before October.

As the holiday approaches, clear favorites are emerging among shoppers as the trendiest costumes for the year.

Meralie Pocock, the owner of Mr. Fun's Costume & Curiosity Emporium in Cuyahoga Falls, said popular costumes this year range from superheroes to traditional horror characters.

"Beetlejuice is hot, hot, hot this year with the new movie coming out," she said. "Deadpool and Wolverine have a lot of traction, too. We have to air freight more of those in."

Pocock said the store tries to reorder costumes as much as possible and keep track of what's selling fast to maintain stock, but the trendy stuff won't be available forever.

"Of course, there will not be as much to choose from on Oct. 30 than there is now," she said. "The busiest week is coming up starting up this weekend. ... The last 10 days or so of the month get pretty crazy."

A survey done by the National Retail Federation compiled the most popular Halloween costumes for the year. For kids, Spider-Man topped the list, and for adults, witch costumes took the crown.

Vampires and cats followed closely after in the adult category, as they claimed the second and third-place spots, respectively. Ghost costumes ranked second for children, followed by princess costumes in third.

Google Trends also put together some Halloween insights, as it released its annual "Frightgeist" site, complete with data for the most searched costume ideas across the country as well as trends across the state.

Cities across Ohio saw some variety among the top spots, as pop stars, Disney characters and superheroes trended high.
