Temporary housing units arrive in mountains under Governor Stein's emergency order

NORTH CAROLINA (WLOS) -- Some of the 1,000 temporary homes, part of Governor Josh Stein's executive order, have arrived in mountain communities.

According to the governor's office, families have been assigned to mobile units in Old Fort, Sugar Grove, West Jefferson and Canton.

Stein's first executive order of "increasing temporary housing supply in Western North Carolina" authorized the state Department of Public Safety to purchase 1,000 temporary homes for people displaced by Helene.

The order waived certain regulations to speed up the process. The governor's office is working with Emergency Management to provide safe and warm housing.

NC GOV. JOSH STEIN ANNOUNCES FIVE EXECUTIVE ORDERS FOR HELENE RECOVERY

Anyone concerned about their living situation after Helene can call 844-746-2326 to be matched with housing that best fits their needs.

Gov. Josh Stein visited Asheville on Thursday, Jan. 2, to present his first executive orders, aimed at bolstering recovery efforts in the aftermath of Helene.

"More than 12,000 people remain displaced today," Stein said on Jan. 2. "What we want to do in these first six months when FEMA is giving 100% reimbursement to get as many people into these temporary housing units as we possibly can so that they can be on their own properties, safe, overseeing the reconstruction and rebuilding of their properties."

The governor said he issued the executive orders because FEMA will reimburse the state government's procurement costs, as provided by an October order from President Joe Biden to fund North Carolina's recovery for six months.
