Successful southern Illinois harvest wrapping up

An agronomist with Golden Harvest says most farmers in his territory are satisfied with the 2024 harvest season.

Nate Prater, who covers the southern third of Illinois and portions of southwestern Indiana, tells Brownfield...

"For the most part, I think guys were happy about their corn. Probably a little surprised." He says, "I'm gonna say beans. April Beans were exceptional. May beans. Guys, I think maybe expected a little bit more, but overall, they were average, and things were good."

He says planting dates seem to be the most important yield factor this year.

"Corn. There were some yield differences, but not nearly what was expected." He says, "Now on the bean side, however, the April beans are still tops on when it comes to yield. There's been some good May beans. Don't get me wrong, but it's going to be hands down April beans were better."

Prater says the dry finish to the season was the biggest detriment to the later planted crops.
