April 2022
▪ April 27 -Two girls, Tara, 16, and Gina, 17, fail to return home to their homes in Broward County. Both girls suffer from substance abuse and mental health problems. Tara leaves a note telling her parents she has run away. The mothers of both girls report them missing to local police.
▪ April 28 - 1 a.m. Police use the GPS on the girls' phones to locate them in Miami Beach. Officers knock on the door of an oceanfront condo occupied by Dr. Jeffrey Kamlet. They inform Kamlet that they are looking for a missing girl. The girls are found hiding in a hall closet.
2:30 a.m. - Miami Beach police handcuff the two girls for transport to the police station.
4:30 a.m. - The girls are released by police into the custody of their parents. Both mothers are told that a detective would follow up with them. But that never happens.
May 2022
▪ May 23 - Miami Beach police close the case. Tara's mother writes an email to Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. She tells Rundle that she believes that Kamlet has been having sex with young girls in exchange for prescription drugs and cash.
June 2022
▪ Tara enters a drug treatment program in California. Francisco "Frank" Casanovas, an investigator for the state attorney's human trafficking task force, is assigned to the case.
July 2022
▪ July 8 - Casanovas interviews Tara, who tells him that Kamlet not only had sex with Gina but that he has tried to get her to hook him up with other young girls. Tara indicates that Kamlet had drugs and guns in his condo.
▪Sometime late in July, Kamlet and Gina connect again. He picks up Gina in his Corvette in Miami Beach and takes her to his condo, where they have sex a second time. He texts her that he will take care of her "if we have chemistry."
September 2022
▪ Sept. 6 - Casanovas takes a sworn recorded statement from Gina who describes in detail how she met Kamlet, and how he handcuffed her to a bed and had sex with her. Gina gives Casanovas her phone so it can be examined for communications with Kamlet.
October 2022
▪ Oct. 30 - Casanovas meets with Gina again, this time to have her identify several pieces of evidence, including screenshots, Uber records and Tinder communications that were taken from her cell phone. He also obtains Kamlet's phone records.
November 2022
▪ Gina is committed to a treatment facility on the west coast of Florida.
NOTE: From November 2022 to March 2023 there is no evidence from the case file that anything was done with the investigation.
March 2023
▪ March 7 - Gina turns 18, and returns home from rehab. She is sober and tells her mother she intends to stay that way.
▪ March 9 - Casanovas obtains arrest and search warrants for Kamlet. The next day, Casanovas, accompanied by Miami Beach police, arrest Kamlet at his condo on sex trafficking charges, as well as 10 other felonies. He is booked at the Miami-Dade County jail.
▪ March 10 - Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer releases Kamlet on a $92,500 bond and places him on house arrest with a GPS ankle monitor. He is prohibited from coming within 500 yards of the victims and has to remain home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With prior approval, he is permitted to go to his office, his place of worship and the grocery store.
▪ March 14 - A childhood friend of Kamlet's daughter writes a letter to the state attorney calling Kamlet a predator and alleging that Kamlet gave both her and his daughter oxycontin and Xanax when they were minors. She estimated that his daughter was around 16 at the time. (Kamlet's daughter died of a drug overdose in 2017).
May 2023
▪ May 10 - Casanovas, the lead investigator on the Kamlet case, resigns from the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office after serving less than two years.
June 2023
▪ June 4 - 5 p.m. Gina, who is living with her father in Davie, travels to South Beach. She texts her mother about 5 p.m. to tell her where she is and that her phone battery was low. This is the last time her mother hears from Gina.
10 p.m. - Miami Beach police question Gina after finding her on Lincoln Walk accompanied by a homeless man. She claims she is friends with the man, who was drinking alcohol. She smelled of alcohol, but police note in their report that she did not appear to be inebriated.
▪ June 6 - 11 p.m. An incident is noted on Kamlet's GPS requiring two officers to visit Kamlet at his home to "troubleshoot." The GPS report does not explain what happened, and Miami-Dade County officials said there is no report detailing the visit.
▪ June 7 - After not reaching her daughter for three days, Gina's mother contacts the state attorney's office. She also calls hospitals, the medical examiner and police.
▪ June 8 - Gina's mother files an official missing person's report with Davie police. That same day, about 10 a.m., a young woman's body is found floating in the New River Canal in El Portal. There is no identification with the body.
▪ June 9 - The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner conducts an autopsy of the body. At the conclusion, the cause of death is pending the results of toxicology reports.
▪ June 14-21 - Kamlet receives permission to travel to Colorado for his daughter's wedding. He is ordered to remain on GPS monitoring for the duration of the trip.
▪ June 20 - A homicide investigator from Miami-Dade police meets with Gina's mother to tell her that her daughter's body was found. Police open a homicide investigation and obtain a warrant to track her cell phone.
September 2023
▪ Sept. 1 - Kamlet's attorneys expect the case to be dropped after the death of the key witness. But in a surprise, the state attorney files a new set of charges against Kamlet, amending its case to drop some charges and add several counts of possession of child pornography. The sex trafficking charges stand. Kamlet pleads not guilty.
March 2024
▪ March 25 - As part of a deal, Kamlet pleads guilty to one count of interference with the custody of a minor, pays fines totaling $750 and serves one day probation. He also relinquishes his medical license with the state of Florida. He is released.
"The criminal case against Jeffrey Kamlet was severely impacted by the death of one victim, the focus of the Human Trafficking charges, and the unwillingness of the second victim to continue her participation in the criminal court process," a state attorney statement said.
June 2024
▪ June 20 - At a hearing, Kamlet's lawyers seek the return of material seized during the search of his home in March 2023. A federal prosecutor asks the judge to turn his electronic devices over to them for further investigation. The prosecutor indicates that they suspect his devices may contain further evidence of child pornography.
August 2024
▪ Aug. 5 - Kamlet is indicted on federal narcotics charges. He faces one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. Kamlet is released after posting 10% of the $100,000 bond.
October 2024
▪ Oct. 25 - After the Miami Herald raises questions about the police investigation, the Miami Beach police announce they have opened an internal affairs probe into the case. They declined to answer any questions or provide any further documents.
December 2024
▪ Dec. 4 - The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner releases Gina's autopsy report. Her cause of death is listed as "undetermined."
▪ Dec. 13 - Kamlet's lawyers give federal prosecutors a draft motion to suppress evidence in the narcotics case. The federal prosecutors acknowledge that there are significant legal issues with their case, and the judge agrees to postpone the trial.
