WINGATE, N.C. (WBTV) - A police officer in Union County may have only months to live after he was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor.
A GoFundMe said Eric Tallent, a husband and father of five, has an aggressive tumor that has already spread. His doctors said he has eight months to live, but that could be longer depending on how the tumor responds to treatment.
The fundraiser has a message from his wife, Brandi, which says the 42-year-old father and Wingate police officer will begin chemotherapy and radiation soon. She said their insurance covers only part of Eric's treatment.
"As Eric focuses on fighting this battle, he won't be able to work, which means I'm now the sole provider for our family of seven," Brandi wrote. "We have five children, ages 2, 14, 16, 16, and 18, and it will be a daily struggle to keep up with the bills, take care of our kids, and be by Eric's side through this."
"Eric is the most loving husband and father, and he's always put our family first," she continued. "He served in the 82nd Airborne unit, dedicating his time and efforts to back our country. Now it's our turn to back him as well. I want to do everything I can to support him in this fight."
As of Jan. 23, the GoFundMe had already raised more than $13,000 after 150 people donated. Anyone wishing to give can do so here.
"We humbly ask for your prayers for Eric's healing and strength for our family during this difficult time," Brandi wrote on the fundraiser. "From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your kindness, your prayers, and your support. Your generosity gives us hope and strength to keep going."
Like Brandi, the Wingate Police Department also asked for the community's thoughts and prayers.
In addition to the GoFundMe, the Have a Heart Foundation of Union County has helped to raise money for the Tallent family.
On Feb. 16, the Wingate Social House is hosting a charity concert. The restaurant said a portion of proceeds will go directly toward helping with medical expenses.
