How to Gua Sha Your Body, According to a Skin Pro

With seasonal weather changes, the stressors of daily life, work responsibilities and the everyday tasks and chores, it's common to experience inflammation, aches and pains and swelling throughout your body. That being said, any chance we can get to treat our body to a little TLC can go a long way in improving not just our mood, but the way our body feels as well. One of our favorite ways to do this is by using a gua sha on our body, an ancient technique that helps reduce swelling, soothe muscle tension and allows us to indulge in some much-needed self-care. Here, we get into all of the incredible benefits of using a gua sha on your body, how to gua sha your body and more.

What exactly is the gua sha technique?

You may have heard the term "gua sha" time and time again on social media, but you may not understand exactly what it is or its history. Essentially, gua sha refers to a curved tool used for lymphatic drainage. "Gua sha, a centuries-old traditional Chinese technique, has become a revered practice in modern skincare, celebrated for its profound benefits," says Margo Copeland, an esthetician based in California. "This ritual involves the gentle scraping of the skin with smooth-edged tools, often crafted from luxurious materials like rose quartz."

You can gua sha both your face and body and the best part is that it can be done right at home -- no need to book an expensive appointment at a salon (unless, of course, you want to treat yourself!).

Benefits of gua sha for the body

The reason why gua sha is so buzzy and such a popular tool and technique is that it really does work and offers amazing benefits without having to break the bank.

Lymphatic drainage

One of the benefits that gua sha is most known for is its incredible ability to aid in lymphatic drainage. "This ancient practice promotes lymphatic drainage, enhancing circulation and reducing muscle tension, perfect for combating the discomforts of aging," affirms Copeland. Lymphatic drainage refers to reducing swelling that occurs in areas like the neck, legs and chest where lymph nodes are. This lymphatic drainage, as Copeland explains, helps improve your circulation and ease pain in your muscles.

Anti-aging benefits

Gua sha can also help improve the overall look and feel of our skin. "With regular use, gua sha smooths skin texture, diminishes fine lines and stimulates collagen production, leaving your complexion radiant and youthful," explains Copeland. As we age, we lose some of our natural collagen each year, so looking for products and techniques that boost our collagen production is key.

How to gua sha your body

Mastering your gua sha technique just takes some practice and the right tool -- and a few expert tips don't hurt either.

"Start your gua sha routine with clean skin, applying a generous amount of high-quality sesame oil (she recommends the sesame oil from Whole Foods) -- always my number 1 -- renowned for its healing properties and non-comedogenic nature," recommends Copeland. Then, sweep your tool across your skin in your preferred area with light pressure in downward motions, which enhances circulation, says Copeland.

Copeland recommends using a gua sha on the shoulders especially, "particularly the area just below the neck and around the chest are especially beneficial, as they contain numerous acupuncture points that enhance overall wellness," she says." Incorporating gua sha into your routine can lead to a significant reduction in tension and revitalization of the skin." However, your face and legs are great to gua sha as well, as you may experience swelling in these places too.

Best types of gua sha tools for the body

Copeland prefers using a rose quartz or jade gua sha tool. The former is "known for its soothing properties and ability to enhance skin rejuvenation" and the latter offers "a cooling effect that promotes healing," she says.

For the body specifically, Copeland recommends choosing a gua sha of a larger size. "I love utilizing large, multi-edge gua sha tools for the body, as they effectively target larger areas and facilitate a more comprehensive treatment," she tells us.
